Check out the cherry blossom lipstick and the smokey eyelids. Check out skinny jeans. Check out the dead kid in the mirror. This is Mattie Hathaway's typical daily schedule at the age of sixteen. Since her mother attempted to kill her when she was five years old, she has had the ability to see ghosts. She doesn't want anyone to know that she can communicate with spooks. Fostering children is difficult enough without having to deal with being called a weirdo. Usually, the ghosts disappear when she ignores them. This time, there's a minor issue. Sally, her foster sister, is the ghost she sees. She is perceived by everyone as simply another fugitive. However, Mattie is aware of the fact that she was murdered. Foster children look out for one another, and Mattie feels obligated to assist Sally, but she is unable to do so on her own. She hooks up with a young police officer against her better judgment, and the two of them set out to find out what really happened when Sally vanished. The murderer is now aiming for her. Finding the truth before the serial killer discovers her turns into a race.
