The Power of Darkness is Leo Tolstoy’s intense drama about greed, temptation, guilt, and moral collapse in rural Russian life. The play follows Nikita, a peasant whose selfish choices draw him into adultery, deception, violence, and increasingly terrible consequences. As lies multiply and family relationships deteriorate, Tolstoy exposes the destructive effects of desire, social pressure, and the absence of moral responsibility. Dark and uncompromising, the play combines psychological realism with a powerful ethical message. Through suffering, confession, and remorse, Tolstoy explores whether redemption remains possible after serious wrongdoing, making this one of his strongest dramatic examinations of conscience and human weakness.
