Hillton Academy's winter sports season brims with rivalry, grit, and school spirit. On a raw November afternoon, Captain Donald Cunningham drills his team on the demands of a brutal cross-country race against St. Eustace and Shrewsburg, urging pacing, courage, and teamwork over reckless speed. Among the runners is Wayne Gordon, an inexperienced boy whose determination is tested by fences, hedges, and the dreaded water jump. When Donald is injured and forced to watch from the stands, the race tightens into a desperate struggle, and Wayne, stung by humiliation, finds the resolve to surge to a thrilling one-yard victory for Hillton. The excitement shifts from the course to the frozen river, where Wayne, Don, and Dave pursue a mysterious skater in the shadows and glimpse the edge of a larger secret. Soon afterward, the academy's skating carnival fills the ice with races, laughter, and friendly teasing, as Paddy wins the mile, Don excels in the hurdles, and Dave gamely keeps going. The day's comic climax comes in the faculty race, when the mysterious "Unknown" is revealed as Professor Durkee, whose awkward style hides astonishing speed as he overtakes Professor Wheeler and wins in a burst of flying coat tails and muffler.
