Legends of Old Honolulu gathers traditional Hawaiian myths connected to the land, the sea, and the early people of Oʻahu. These stories explain not only natural forces but human conduct, tracing how gods, heroes, and spirits shaped the places that later became the modern city of Honolulu.

From sacred cliffs and hidden caves to royal lineages and divine encounters, each legend reflects a culture in which nature and spirituality were inseparable. Love, rivalry, punishment, and protection all unfold within landscapes that remain visible today.

This illustrated edition enhances Westervelt’s classic collection with newly commissioned artwork, a modern foreword, and an original author biography. These additions frame the legends as both literature and cultural history, offering contemporary readers a deeper connection to Hawaiian storytelling.

Ideal for readers of mythology, folklore, and Pacific Island history, this volume presents Honolulu not only as a city, but as a place shaped by story.
