Susan Hilmen is Central Europe's most prestigious art historian and restorer. At the height of her renown—while tasked with cataloging the secret holdings of one of Slovenia's largest private collections—she suffers a severe stroke that leaves her paralyzed and unable to speak or write, trapped within her own mind.
Enter Elissa Choever, a novice restorer drowning in debt and on the verge of eviction. Invited by the mysterious Mc Svendielsen—a renowned restorer and foundation curator—Elissa is hired to complete the monumental inventory Susan left unfinished.
To meet the deadline, Elissa stays at the imposing, isolated Hilmen mansion in Bled, a picturesque Alpine town in Slovenia. In Susan's lavish study, surrounded by antique canvases and musical scores, she stumbles upon a restricted manuscript-style diary. Within its pages, Susan recounts the unvarnished truth about her obsession with Mc, the dark reality behind their marriage, and the mysterious loss of her partial vision under circumstances never explained to the police—including her account of the tragedy that claimed the couple's children.
As she reads on, Elissa realizes the line between sanity and manipulation is razor-thin. Entangled in a web of secrets and magnetically drawn to Mc, she finds herself trapped in a psychological game where every glance conceals a threat. Torn between revealing a terrifying past unknown to Mc and protecting Susan's writings, she discovers that the mansion holds one final, devastating secret—revealed between the lines of the very last page.
