The story begins in the shadows of the Cornerstone AME church, where both women have spent years masking their personal struggles—Bree, a woman trapped in an emotionally stagnant marriage, and Cissy, a mother caught in the cycle of an abusive relationship—behind a veil of religious compliance. Their journeys toward liberation are ignited by the exposure of their church's corruption, a catalyst that forces them to confront the "but" that has defined their spiritual and personal lives: I am saved, BUT my life is a mess.

As they strip away the expectations of their community and the men who sought to control them, the novel chronicles their difficult transition into independence. Bree must find the strength to leave a marriage that stifles her growth, while Cissy fights to secure safety and stability for her four children—Mya, Markee, Mackenzie, and Makayla—after cutting ties with their volatile father.
