Volume 2 of Sir Edward Burnett Tylor's *Primitive Culture* (1871) continues the work begun in Volume 1 — tracing the development of *animism* from its earliest forms into the historic religions. The chapters treat the doctrine of spirits, the worship of nature, sacrifice, prayer, the doctrines of magical charm, and the survival of older religious ideas within later religious systems.
