Set in the harsh desert West, the novel follows John Hare, a fugitive near death who is rescued by August Naab, a stern yet compassionate Mormon leader. As outlaws close in, moral duty clashes with survival. Hare finds refuge among Naab’s family and forms a quiet bond with Mescal, a Navajo-raised woman. Love, faith, and violence shape a fight for belonging.
