A sharp and witty departure from traditional rural tragedy, this social comedy follows the ambitious Ethelberta Pethel as she maneuvers through the upper echelons of society. Hiding her humble roots behind a facade of elegance, she uses her intellect to secure her family’s future in a world ruled by wealth and prestige. It is a clever exploration of class performance and the sacrifices required for social mobility.
