The Power of Ramen: A Testimony from the Cemetery of the Living Dead" is a firsthand account of life inside the Miami-Dade County detention system. Written by Jose M. Perez Vila from within the walls of confinement, this eleven-chapter testimony traces the full arc of incarceration — from the first night in solitary confinement to the brutal realities of general population, the unwritten rules of survival, the abuse of power by correctional officers, the slow erosion of family bonds, and the painful process of reentry into a society that marks you before you have a chance to speak.
Ramen is not a metaphor here. It is currency. It is power. It is the economy that runs beneath the official one, where haircuts, debts, and alliances are all settled in packets of instant soup. Understanding ramen is understanding everything about a world that most people prefer not to see — and that this book refuses to let them look away from.
The Power of Ramen does not ask for pity. It asks for attention. For anyone who has lived it, it offers proof that they are not alone. For anyone who hasn't, it offers the clearest window available into the places society builds, funds, and then forgets.
