Richard Digby, a man of uncompromising religious fervor, retreats to a cave to find God in total isolation, only to find himself physically transforming into the stone he resembles. This chilling allegory warns against the dangers of spiritual pride and the rejection of human community. The narrative is a stark, powerful examination of the hardening of the human soul when it is severed from the warmth of empathy. It is a brief but unforgettable story that remains a potent critique of religious extremism and moral rigidity.
