The murder of a debauched landowner ignites a firestorm of suspicion among his three disparate sons. Intellectual atheism clashes with devout mysticism as the family's dirty secrets are dragged into the light. The ensuing trial becomes a battleground for the very soul of Russia, questioning the nature of free will. A monumental drama of passion, morality, and the search for truth.
