Returning to the Russian countryside, a man finds his search for simplicity thwarted by the complex webs of his own history. The narrative vibrates with the tension between individual happiness and the rigid expectations of one's social caste. Turgenev’s prose evokes a world of sun-drenched estates and the bitter sting of unrequited loyalty. It is an evocative portrait of a man caught between two worlds.
