Kakemono: Japanese Sketches is a refined collection of literary impressions that captures the beauty, customs, and atmosphere of Japan through thoughtful observation and descriptive storytelling. Inspired by the traditional hanging scroll, each “sketch” presents a vivid scene—from tranquil gardens and ancient temples to bustling streets and intimate domestic life. A. Herbage Edwards offers readers a sensitive portrayal of Japanese art, etiquette, landscape, and tradition during a period of cultural transition. Blending travel writing with cultural reflection, this work provides an engaging and illuminating glimpse into Japan’s rich heritage and aesthetic spirit.
