The Debtor is set in Banbridge, a small New England village shaped by wealth, class, and social expectation. The story follows residents navigating propriety, ambition, and human folly, particularly socially conscious women whose interactions reveal pride, curiosity, and class tensions. Early scenes, including a humorous social-call mishap, foreshadow the intricate interplay of debt, reputation, and the moral choices that drive the narrative.
