The Octoroon is a Victorian novel of identity, prejudice, and forbidden love set against the American South. Cora Leslie, a beautiful young woman of mixed heritage, moves within wealthy society until her ancestry is revealed, placing her in danger of rejection and injustice. As friendship, romance, and ambition collide, Braddon exposes the cruelty of racial divisions, the fragility of social acceptance, and the moral conflicts born of a society built on inequality.
