Malay Sketches is a series of vivid portraits of everyday life in the Malay States at the turn of the twentieth century. Sir Frank Swettenham describes village customs, river journeys, court life, and social traditions with clarity and restraint.

Rather than presenting sweeping history, the book focuses on human encounters — conversations with chiefs, scenes from markets, and observations of rural communities. Through these moments, Swettenham reveals how culture, environment, and belief shape daily life.

This illustrated edition adds original artwork to enrich the sense of place and includes newly written introductory material for contemporary readers. Together, they offer a thoughtful and engaging window into a society seen through patient observation and lived experience.
