Description & Overview

ONE KOREA!
Kwang Suh's Four Measures for the Unification of the Korean Peninsula

For nearly eighty years, one people has lived divided. It is time to change the conditions that keep them apart.

The Korean Peninsula remains divided into North and South Korea by a boundary fortified with barbed wire and landmines. Families have spent entire lifetimes apart. Fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters have grown old and died without knowing whether those they loved were still alive.

How much longer must this continue?

Dr. Kwang H. Suh has devoted more than forty years to one question: How can the Korean Peninsula achieve peaceful and lasting unification without another war?

His answer begins with a principle born from his own experience of hunger, hardship, and division:
Bread and Freedom.

For decades, governments have negotiated, leaders have met, and assistance has been sent to North Korea. Yet the Korean Peninsula remains divided.

Dr. Suh argues that what has been missing is structural change. Before political unification can succeed, conditions for peaceful unification must be created through economic development, education, international contact, employment, and participation in the world economy. People must have the opportunity to experience Bread and Freedom for themselves.

Dr. Suh proposes Four Measures for the Unification of the Korean Peninsula:

•Open North Korea to international education and cultural exchange. Bring students, scholars, educators, and others into contact with the wider world.
•Bring world corporations and factories into North Korea. Create employment, production, economic opportunity, and a self-sustaining economy.
•Bring the Summer Olympic Games to Pyongyang. Use this international gathering to open North Korea to people, ideas, commerce, and peaceful cooperation.
•End fragmented cash assistance by establishing one transparent international channel. Replace scattered cash transfers with one accountable system supporting development rather than dependency.

Leaders change. Governments change. International circumstances change. But a lasting structure can survive them all.

Dr. Suh's approach begins with economic development, education, international cooperation, human dignity, and freedom—creating conditions under which Koreans themselves can move toward a lasting One Korea.

Peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula affect Northeast Asia and the world. Governments, the United Nations, businesses, universities, and ordinary people throughout the world all have a role.

This Second Edition carries the same message to readers in six languages and eight linguistic editions: English; Korean in Hangul-only and Hanja-mixed forms; Simplified Chinese; Traditional Chinese; Japanese; Russian; and Spanish.

Dr. Suh invites people worldwide to understand Korea's division—and to become part of the peaceful effort to end it.

Imagine a Korean Peninsula where people can once again travel freely from South to North and North to South; where families are never again separated for generations; and where economic prosperity, human dignity, peace, and freedom belong to all Koreans.

This is not a call for sympathy. It is a call for action.

Bread and Freedom can open the road. Economic development can change the conditions. Structural change can make peaceful unification possible.

One Korea!
The division of the Korean Peninsula must not become the final chapter of our history.
