In the last month of winter Igraine counts what is left in the storehouse. She reckons soberly, because nothing is given to her: not the land, not the weather, not her husband.

Then Myrddin comes to the headland, and what he wants does not appear in her accounts. What follows is known to the world as legend. Igraine lives it as a series of decisions in which she is offered, every time, a choice between two losses.

The story of Arthur's mother, told without magic and without consolation: a woman who negotiates, who distributes her daughters, and who writes it all down in the end because nothing else is left to her.
