On the last winter the army will fire howitzers at the mountains above Highway 9, Vera Wiebe decides each morning whether the road opens.

She has done it for nineteen years. She is good at it. And on the twenty-eighth of February she opens the road at four fifty-two, and four hours later a slope her own bulletin called moderate comes down on two plough trucks at kilometre seventy-four.

Two men die. Vera signed the bulletin. Vera believed it.

Then she cuts a pit at the fracture line and finds a layer of ice that, according to every weather record she has, never formed. To prove she did not kill those men, she will have to attack the only thing she owns: her own credibility. And the snow that proves it is already melting.
