Description & Overview

Do you walk at half five in the morning, or after dark, so that you won't meet anyone?

Has your route quietly become a series of detours — crossing the road, ducking behind parked cars, turning back at the corner where the terrier lives?

And has someone told you your dog is dominant, and did the corrections they suggested make her worse?

Then here is the sentence the rest of this book is built on.

She is not plotting. She is panicking.

Aggression is deliberate: a calm, goal-directed choice aimed at a result. What happens at the end of your leash is closer to a scream during a nightmare — a burst of adrenaline that arrives before any decision does. The two look similar from ten feet away and they need opposite treatment, which is why so much well-meaning advice has left you further back than you started. Punish a panicking dog and you have not corrected anything. You have added fear on top of fear, and taught her that you are part of the frightening event rather than the safe place in it.

The second reason nothing has worked is less emotional and more practical: you were handed techniques before anyone gave you a measurement.

This book starts with three numbers instead. A full inventory of what actually sets her off — dogs, strangers, sounds, sudden appearances. The distance at which she tips from noticing into exploding. And how long she takes to come back down afterwards. Those numbers decide everything else, including the one that matters most: your working distance, which sits ten feet outside her reaction distance, at the range where she can see the trigger and still take a piece of chicken within two seconds. That two-second window is the whole definition of "she can still learn right now."

It also explains the thing that has probably broken your heart more than once — the good week undone by one bad Tuesday. A single full reaction re-sensitises the pathway you have been patiently quietening, and her reaction distance can shrink by twenty to thirty per cent for up to three days afterwards. Not because you failed. Because nobody told you the recovery window existed.

From there you get the practical scaffolding. Walk times and routes mapped for cover and exit points, and a plan for the front window and the garden, where the ambushes happen. Straight answers on equipment, including why aversive tools backfire specifically on a frightened dog, for reasons that have nothing to do with morality. Five foundation behaviours — Look at That, the emergency U-turn, Find It, hand target, and mat settle — each with its failure points named rather than glossed over. A six-step emergency sequence short enough to recite while your heart is going, and a card to carry it on.

Then the plan itself: ten weeks, three five-minute sessions a day, with separate chapters for dogs, for people and delivery drivers, for traffic and fireworks and skateboards, and for the barrier frustration that happens through a window or a car door.

And an honest chapter on when to stop reading and ring someone — including how to read trainer credentials, and what to take to the vet.

Grab the book, and before you teach her a single thing, spend one walk doing nothing but measuring the distance
