Thomas Reed is the man everyone calls when something goes wrong.
His sister needs money?
Thomas handles it.
His mother needs a doctor?
Thomas arranges it.
An employee has a family emergency?
Thomas gets on a plane.
His childhood friend, Jessica Morgan, becomes a single mother after a painful divorce?
Thomas makes sure she never faces anything alone.
His wife, Laura, used to love that about him.
Until she became the only person Thomas expected to survive without his help.
Laura waits through canceled dinners and abandoned weekends.
She tells herself Jessica truly needs him.
Then Laura receives news that a medical procedure she has feared for months must happen sooner than expected.
Thomas promises to stay with her.
On the morning of the procedure, Jessica calls.
Her teenage son has been arrested.
Thomas leaves.
Laura wakes from anesthesia without her husband.
Kevin Price, Thomas's older cousin, is the person waiting beside her bed.
That evening, Thomas arrives carrying flowers and explanations.
Laura does not scream.
She asks him to move out.
Now Thomas's family is horrified.
His mother takes Laura's side.
His children refuse to accept that their father was simply “helping someone.”
Jessica finally realizes Thomas has been giving her more than friendship should require.
And Kevin, recently divorced and careful about boundaries, becomes the one person Laura can depend on without asking.
Thomas has spent years saving everybody.
Now the marriage he neglected is the one thing money, influence and good intentions cannot rescue for him.
