At the Omaha Spaceport, nearly two hundred glamorous contestants discover that the Miss Outer Space pageant is no ordinary beauty contest. Packed into cramped quarters, they gossip, flirt, and bicker while facing a punishing schedule of tests in appearance, domestic science, photography, fitness, and endurance. Their comic rivalries and romantic hopes collide with the rigid discipline of the spaceport, creating a sharp satire of both beauty culture and space-age order. Captain Johannson makes the stakes plain: the contest must remain respectable under public scrutiny, and the winner will be chosen not just for looks but for intelligence, common sense, domestic ability, physical fitness, and character. As the women joke, worry, and compare notes, the pageant grows more revealing than glamorous, exposing personality as much as charm. A brisk military-style march to the play area for the next round of testing underscores how demanding the competition truly is, and how much more there is to Miss Outer Space than beauty alone.
