Description & Overview
William Morris's spirited verse Aeneid opens amid storm and ruin, as Juno's hatred drives Aeolus to scatter Aeneas's fleet and nearly destroy the Trojan survivors. Neptune stills the sea, the refugees reach a Libyan harbor, and Aeneas, grieving yet resolute, gathers his men, searches for the missing, and urges them to endure the long road fate has set before them. Their suffering is answered on Olympus: Venus pleads for her son, and Jupiter unveils the vast design behind their trials, foretelling Rome's rise, the line of Ascanius and Romulus, and the future Caesar who will bring peace. In Carthage, Aeneas encounters a city of astonishing industry and a queen shaped by exile and loss. Disguised by Venus, he learns Dido's tragic history, then enters Juno's temple to find Troy's own sorrows painted on its walls, a moving sign that grief is known even in foreign lands. From there the poem turns toward Italy, where omens, oracles, and divine warning prepare the way for conflict. At the Tiber, Aeneas reaches the destined shore, recognizes the prophecy of the "tables," and begins the work of founding a new home as the Latin world stands on the brink of war.
