History of the Radium Girls tells the disturbing true story of the young women who worked with luminous radium paint in early twentieth-century America—and who paid an extraordinary price for the glowing products they helped create.

Radium was once celebrated as a wonder substance. It appeared in medicines, cosmetics, consumer products, and industrial applications, while its mysterious glow captured the imagination of the public. In factories, women were employed to paint tiny numbers and markings on watches and instrument dials. To make their brushes precise, some workers were instructed to shape the tips with their lips.
What they did not fully understand was the danger they were taking home with them.

As workers began suffering unexplained illnesses, devastating dental and bone problems, and other symptoms associated with radiation exposure, questions emerged about what had happened inside the factories. The companies involved resisted responsibility, while physicians and investigators gradually confronted evidence that the workers' illnesses were connected to their employment.

The Radium Girls' struggle became more than a workplace tragedy. Their cases helped expose the human cost of industrial negligence and contributed to a broader transformation in attitudes toward occupational disease, worker protection, corporate accountability, and industrial safety.

This book explores the documented history behind the Radium Girls: the rise of radium culture, the factory conditions, the workers and their illnesses, the medical investigations, the legal battles, the public reaction, and the lasting significance of their fight.
It is a story about women who were told they were handling something miraculous—and who ultimately helped reveal how dangerous that miracle could be.
