Emil Dahl is twenty-nine, slim, porcelain-pale, ice-blue eyes and white-blond hair cut in a modern crop that never quite looks messy. He works numbers all day and starts showing up at The Kiln—an exclusive private gym in a converted brick warehouse—after the regular members have left. He wants the quiet. He wants the empty floor. He does not expect the man who owns the late hours.

Omar Nadir is thirty-eight, six feet of barrel chest and deep olive skin, black hair already silver at the sides, short beard, near-black eyes that do not look away. He is the head trainer and co-owner. He corrects form with one hand on a hip and the other under a bar. He does not raise his voice. When Emil stays past closing three nights in a row, Omar stops pretending the corrections are only about technique.

The weight room is still warm from the day. The mirrors reflect every shift. Omar spots him on the bench, then on the floor, then against the rack. Hands turn into grip. Grip turns into mouth. Mouth turns into the thick stretch of a man who takes what he wants and makes the younger one take it too. Emil says the words that sound like no and means the opposite. Omar claims him anyway—on the rubber mats, in the private locker, bent over the bench while the night cleaner's key scrapes in the outer door and both of them freeze, still locked together, still moving once the footsteps pass.
