Description & Overview

His map helped secure a peace. The people it erased have been paying for it ever since.

In 1896, celebrated cartographer Elias Venn receives a school atlas from a remote mountain village. Beneath his printed name, a child has written: You drew our country wrong. My father died because of it.

Thirty years earlier, Elias returned as the only surviving surveyor of an expedition that helped settle a contested frontier. His partner, Tomas Rook, was said to have died in a snowstorm. The map made Elias famous. Its blank valley made an inhabited country convenient to divide.

Now Tomas's daughter arrives carrying her father's field journal. The weather on the day he supposedly died is the first contradiction. It will not be the last.

Together they travel beyond the checkpoints, across a dangerous river and into the mountains, guided by a man Elias's official account barely acknowledged. Ada seeks the truth about her father. Elias must confront the choices that preserved his career. Around them, families need their roads, homes, and water rights restored before another winter closes in.

But a corrected map is valuable to more than the people it wronged. Two empires are ready to turn the evidence to their own advantage, and a public confession may place the valley in fresh danger.

The Country We Erased is a literary adventure set in an imagined nineteenth-century world: a story of a lost friendship, a daughter's difficult inheritance, and the struggle to tell the truth without claiming ownership of those who need it.
