On a winter night of terror, Lilian is violently carried to a bleak Scottish tower, where locked doors, barred windows, and a fortress-like hall make her captivity feel absolute. There she meets Beatrix Gilruth, a bitter, formidable woman whose taunts hint at a ruined past and a deep hatred for Lord Clermistonlee, while Lilian's defense of Walter Fenton exposes old wounds and fresh danger. Forced into a lavish gown meant to please her captor, Lilian is then confronted by Clermistonlee himself: elegant, mocking, and ruthless, he dismisses law and honor, insisting that scandal has already trapped her and that only submission can save her reputation. Outside the tower, the novel widens to the grim aftermath of political defeat, as captured Scottish soldiers are marched in humiliation toward London and public cruelty mirrors Lilian's private suffering. Her name is dragged through gossip and shame until even friends urge her to marry to "restore" her honor. Meanwhile Walter Fenton, nearly penniless but still loyal, makes his way from Paris to the exiled Stuart court at St. Germain, carrying memories of Scotland, Lilian, and the Jacobite cause. In exile, he finds both sorrow and stubborn hope among fellow Scots clinging to honor and the promise of change. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
