Si Klegg follows a raw Union recruit in the 200th Indiana as he blunders, learns, and slowly hardens into a seasoned Civil War soldier. With his loyal companion Shorty at his side, Si's journey captures the everyday realities of army life: the jokes, the hunger, the exhaustion, the sudden danger, and the hard-won ingenuity that kept ordinary men alive. Eager to do everything right, Si leaves home burdened with gifts from family, friends, and even a preacher, only to discover that sentimental comforts quickly become dead weight on the march. Heat, dust, blisters, hardtack, and relentless movement strip away his civilian ideas of war, while his naïve reverence for military regulations and his fear of the bayonet lead him into comic trouble. He learns the real value of a canteen, improvises with whatever is at hand, and discovers that survival depends less on heroics than on endurance, practicality, and nerve. Along the way, Si endures teasing veterans, humiliating discipline, foraging mishaps, and the stubborn chaos of army mules, all in a lively blend of humor, hardship, and battlefield authenticity.
