A boy takes a boat that isn't his to go and look at a whale.

Max is nine, good at drawing animals and not much else, and nobody at home notices him go. After a storm he cannot read, he washes up on an island of creatures grown wrong. They come for him, and he holds out his father's lighter, and they have never seen fire made.
