It began as a way to protect children.

Schools, doctors and public agencies held pieces of information that could save lives, prevent children from falling through institutional gaps and provide help before problems became crises. Connecting those records seemed sensible. Better data meant earlier intervention, fairer education and fewer failures hidden between disconnected systems.

Then the records became useful for something else.

Universities wanted verified histories. Employers wanted evidence of reliability. Banks wanted to assess young adults who had never borrowed. Insurers wanted better predictions. Governments wanted safer identities. Each new use came with safeguards, restrictions and convincing reasons why a little more continuity could make society fairer and more efficient.

Eventually, childhood stopped ending at adulthood.

In this unsettling speculative future history, Dorian Norven traces how a society built the perfect record of every child—and gradually created a world in which a difficult school year, a family crisis, an old behavioural label or an algorithmic prediction could echo through an entire life.

No dictator ordered it. No single company planned it.

The file simply kept growing.

And society forgot how to let people start again.
