Description & Overview
Electricity was once simple. You paid the bill, pressed the switch and expected the power to be there.
Then everything became electric.
Cars. Heating. Work. Communications. Industry. Artificial intelligence. Homes themselves became intelligent enough to delay appliances, adjust temperatures and decide when batteries should charge. At first, the new system was cheaper, cleaner and more efficient.
Then the grid began depending on it.
Temporary requests to save power became automated restrictions. Emergency controls became permanent planning tools. Household allowances appeared to make shortages fairer. Smart homes learned which uses were essential. Energy priority registers protected the vulnerable. Private batteries became part of the national reserve.
Eventually, paying for electricity was no longer enough. You also needed permission to use it.
Power on Ration is a speculative future history of how a technologically advanced democracy could move step by reasonable step from smart energy management to a society governed by electricity quotas. Told not through a single hero but as the history of an entire society, it follows the policies, crises, technologies and compromises that turn the humble wall socket into an instrument of political power.
