In rural Sligo at the end of the eighteenth century, a May Eve gathering in the Bruin household becomes a haunted contest between hearth and enchantment. Maire, captivated by an old manuscript of faery lands, longs for beauty, freedom, and youth beyond the limits of ordinary life, while Father Hart warns that such dreams invite spiritual danger. When she offers milk and fire to mysterious visitors, the family's unease turns to fear that the fairies have crossed the threshold. Against this charged backdrop, Shawn Bruin answers Maire's restlessness with tenderness, promising love, stability, and the consolations of marriage. Their lyrical exchange offers a vision of human devotion as a refuge from bitterness and constraint. Yet the supernatural will not be kept at bay: a singing voice and a strange faery child enter from the wild, unsettling the room with eerie sweetness before recoiling from the crucifix. The play's central conflict sharpens as Maire stands between Christian home and the seductive freedom of the faery world.
