Set in famine-stricken Ireland, this lyrical play follows a poor peasant family as hunger, fear, and superstition tighten their grip on daily life. Rumors of supernatural presences haunt the countryside, but the greater menace arrives in human form: two polished merchants who offer impossible wealth in exchange for souls. As Mary, Shemus Rua, and Teig struggle between survival and spiritual ruin, their desperation exposes how poverty can distort faith, morality, and hope. Against this darkness stands Countess Cathleen, a noblewoman of rare compassion and sorrow. She gives away her money, orders her lands and treasure sold, and resolves to feed the starving even at terrible personal cost. Around her, Aleel's poetic longing, Oona's steadfast presence, and the merchants' secret dealings create a world where ancient myth, Christian devotion, and demonic temptation collide. As peasants yield to the bargain and spirits labor under the weight of greed, Cathleen chooses sacrifice over safety, offering herself in prayer for the salvation of her people. The result is a haunting drama of famine, charity, and the price of redemption. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
