Description & Overview
W. B. Yeats's ritual drama turns away from stage realism and into a world where song, symbol, and spectacle carry the weight of history. In The Dreaming of the Bones, a young fugitive from the Easter Rising is led through a moonlit Irish landscape by a mysterious stranger and a girl, toward the ruined Abbey of Corcomroe, where politics, national memory, and the supernatural converge. As musicians chant of a "lost kingdom," the play reveals a haunted country in which the dead still shape the living, and the infamous lovers Dermot and Dervorgilla endure an afterlife of separation, meeting only with their eyes as a punishment for betrayal. The second movement of the work shifts to the mythic figure of Cuchulain, hovering between life and death after tragedy and bloodshed. Emer and Eithne Inguba keep vigil beside him as the Sidhe demand a cruel ransom, and a Woman of the Sidhe attempts to lure him away from remorse and earthly love. Through dance, song, and eerie bargaining, Yeats explores jealousy, fidelity, memory, sacrifice, and the fragile boundary between mortal grief and the Otherworld.
