Description & Overview

Lord Jim follows Jim, a young British seaman whose dreams of courage and heroism are shattered by a moment of fear aboard the pilgrim ship Patna. When the vessel appears to be sinking, Jim abandons his post along with several other crew members, only to discover that the ship and its passengers survive. Haunted by shame and condemned for his actions, Jim becomes determined to rebuild his reputation and prove himself worthy of the heroic ideal he once embraced.

His search for redemption eventually takes him to the remote Eastern world of Patusan, where he earns the trust of its inhabitants and becomes a respected leader. Yet Jim’s past continues to follow him, and his idealistic belief in honor is repeatedly tested by violence, betrayal, responsibility, and circumstances beyond his control.

Narrated through shifting perspectives, particularly that of the observant seaman Marlow, the novel explores guilt, honor, courage, identity, responsibility, and the complicated nature of moral judgment. Conrad presents Jim as a deeply conflicted figure whose desire for redemption is inseparable from his struggle to understand his own failure.

Combining maritime adventure with psychological and philosophical depth, Lord Jim is a powerful exploration of the difference between heroic ideals and human fallibility.
