Description & Overview
What happens when you know that a ritual makes no sense, but every part of you still insists that you must perform it?
I have lived with obsessive-compulsive disorder since childhood. As a seven-year-old boy, I carefully avoided stepping on the lines between tiles. I counted things in groups of eight, repeated certain actions and hummed melodies almost constantly. I did not know what OCD was. I only knew that if I refused to obey, something bad might happen.
As I grew older, OCD found new ways to become part of my life. It attached itself to music, religion, exercise, work, numbers and even my interest in cybersecurity and digital privacy.
Over the years, I developed several personal methods for dealing with it. I tried to reverse its threats, redirect its pressure into useful activities and simply observe its commands without obeying them. Some of these methods helped me considerably. Others worked for a while but eventually created new problems of their own.
This book is an honest account of those experiences. I do not present myself as someone who defeated OCD forever. I describe what helped me, what harmed me and how my understanding of the disorder changed over time.
Most importantly, I came to realize that OCD was never the true source of my strength. It did not make me a musician, teacher, writer, cybersecurity professional, husband or father. The determination and curiosity were mine. OCD had simply convinced me that fear was the only way to access them.
This book is for people living with OCD, but also for their partners, relatives and friends. OCD is often invisible from the outside. I hope my story can make that hidden struggle a little easier to understand.
This is a personal account, not a medical guide or a replacement for professional treatment. It is the story of how I learned that freedom does not always mean silencing OCD. Sometimes it means hearing its command and choosing what to do next.
