Maren Kestrel has learned to keep her head down, care for the people who depend on her, and trust her own instincts. Then a wolf crashes through the window of the inn where she works. The animal is too large and too strange to be natural, and a hooded rider waits outside as if the attack is only the beginning. Maren gets young Tobin to safety and faces the danger with the iron poker in her hand, refusing to let fear make her choices for her.
The encounter draws Maren into the shadow of Drunmoor, where old stories, a priestess’s stone, and a wounded king point toward a history she never asked to inherit. A poison, an ash-marked warning, and an ambush on the road make it clear that someone is moving against the people around her. When a bond begins to awaken between Maren and Kaelen, the connection brings its own questions. Is it a promise, a threat, or a choice they can still make for themselves?
This opening installment blends enemies-to-lovers tension, a fated connection, and a fantasy conflict built around loyalty and power. Maren is a healer first, but the journey east and the return to Blackspire force her to confront the wolf inside her and the role others expect her to take. A sacred rite, a betrayal, and the revelation of the Ashen Wolf push the story toward war, while a message from the harbor warns that the danger is spreading.
