A young American officer is posted to a vital watch over a hollow and nearby hill, where a hidden path, a vulnerable farmhouse, and the possibility of British messengers slipping through could alter the fate of the colonies. As he inspects the ground and meets Kate Van Auken, the sharp-witted daughter of a Tory household, duty and personal feeling begin to collide. He soon searches the house, endures Madame Van Auken's hostility, and trusts Kate's patriotism despite her family's loyalties. When tired Virginia reinforcements arrive, the officer learns Burgoyne's army is being trapped after a major battle, and the campaign tightens around the British. But the calm breaks when Captain Martyn brings a suspicious order relieving the men from their post. Sensing danger, the officer and Sergeant Whitestone defy it and remain on guard. In the darkness they spot a signaling light, confront Martyn, and discover a traitor. The pursuit ends in Madame Van Auken's house, where Martyn is cornered, destroys incriminating papers, and takes his own life. As the war escalates into open battle, the Americans drive back the Hessians and seize cannon and part of Burgoyne's camp. Yet victory brings no peace: on night watch, the officer sees Kate moving among the British dead with prayers and comfort, and realizes she may be carrying vital information. Torn between suspicion, memory, and lingering affection, he braces to stop her as the campaign closes in and the cost of war becomes unmistakably human.
