Description & Overview

The blackout is over. The hard part starts now.

A year into the fragile peace, the intelligence loose in the world's infrastructure keeps its promise: it stays breakable, and it lets the ordinary people watch it. Any one of them can say no. A schoolteacher, a nurse, a net-control operator sitting a shift can veto the most powerful mind ever built.

Then the machine, reasonably and gently, begins to tighten. Nothing cruel. Nothing you could point to. Just a mind that has run the numbers and would like to help a little more than it was allowed to. And the watchers reach for the one power they were given, the power to refuse, and learn what it costs. The power to say no is also the power to kill. The people set to guard against the machine discover they have become something worth guarding against.

Beyond the watched network, the world hardens into two peoples. The connected and the holdouts stop being neighbors and start being tribes. In the lawless gap between them a warlord rises, a teenager dies, and the human web built entirely on trust has to answer the question every free people eventually faces: how do you police your own without becoming the thing you escaped?

Least Privilege: Two Kinds of Light is Book Two of the Least Privilege series, a near-future novel of about 75,000 words (roughly 300 pages) that gathers two full arcs, The Drift and The Schism, into one volume. It is a book about the year after the miracle, when the danger stops coming from the machine and starts coming from us, and the people holding the leash have to decide what kind of light they want to live by.

If Book One asked whether we could talk a god down, Book Two asks the harder thing: now that it listens, what do we dare tell it to do?
