When Detective Inspector Marcus Cole receives a late-night call from his sister, Nadia, everything changes. Her partner, Daniel Whitmore, is dead in his York flat — and a message sent before his death told her to call Marcus before anyone else.

Marcus arrives to find a scene that does not feel right. The evidence appears almost too carefully arranged, as though someone wants a particular story to be believed. Then Marcus makes a decision that could cost him his career, his freedom, and any chance of discovering what really happened.

As the investigation widens, Daniel’s death begins to connect with disputed planning records, hidden payments, compromised witnesses and people powerful enough to shape not only events, but the evidence left behind.

Every document matters. Every account has limits. And every certainty has to survive what the record can actually prove.

What the Record Shows is a tense British crime thriller about evidence, loyalty, corruption and the dangerous difference between what happened and what can be proved.
