The Last Rebel is a historical adventure set in the wild mountain country of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee, where war, loyalty, and survival collide in a landscape as beautiful as it is unforgiving. From the opening hunt gone wrong to the last glow of a fire in a ravine, the novel follows men and women tested by danger, secrecy, and shifting fortunes on the edge of the wilderness. Arthur West, lost in the autumn mountains and threatened by snow, fires his rifle toward a distant smoke signal and is led to rescue by an elderly stranger in a worn military uniform. That stranger is Colonel John Greene Hetherill, a proud Confederate officer whose hospitality is matched by suspicion. Arthur is taken to Fort Defiance, a hidden stronghold with drawbridge, barred rooms, and armed defenses, where he becomes a prisoner under strict military rule. As he recovers from injury, he is drawn to a mysterious young woman glimpsed in the courtyard, while the household's hostility toward Yankees and the colonel's rigid code of honor deepen the tension.
