Description & Overview

It appears on a Tuesday, the kind of Tuesday that smells of toast and homework. A door that was never in the wall before. It is not particularly tall or wide. Tiny silver threads run through it like moonlight. Instead of a keyhole there is a question mark. On the door are the words: YOU MAY OPEN THIS DOOR. BUT YOU MUST CHOOSE WHERE.

When you step through, you find the Unfinished World: a landscape under a sky that keeps changing color, floating islands, a map full of blank spaces, and a small creature named Nib who thinks lost people are the most interesting. The Heart of the World is missing. Without it, the world will stay unfinished forever and has already begun to flicker.

You travel with Nib through a forest of whispering trees, meet the Keeper of Almost (who collects every idea that was never finished), navigate the City of Maybe, and finally face the Heart itself, a glowing collection of possibilities that is afraid of being forced to become only one thing.

This story is written in second person. You invent the way to travel, the way across a canyon, the name of an unfinished creature, the enormous thing in the sky, the path through the city, a new invention, the world the Heart becomes, and the small object that returns home with you. Whatever you imagine becomes part of the story.

The Door That Wasn't There is an interactive middle-grade adventure about imagination, unfinished things, and the freedom to leave room for what comes next. Perfect for readers ages 8–12, for sharing aloud, and for anyone who has ever wanted the story to ask what they would do.
