Description & Overview
Einstein begins with a deceptively simple question: does nature really favor any one state of motion, or are our physical concepts meaningful only when they can be tied clearly to experience? From classical mechanics and its inertial frames to the fragile ideal of rigid bodies and absolute time, he exposes the limits of familiar ideas and shows why they cannot provide the final foundation for physics. That critique leads directly to special relativity, born from the need to reconcile the relativity principle with Maxwell's light principle, and to the startling consequences of Lorentz transformations: no absolute time, length contraction, altered clock rates, and the deep unity of mass and energy. But special relativity is only a beginning. Einstein shows that it still leaves privileged inertial frames and unresolved questions about motion, then uses the equivalence of inertial and gravitational mass to connect acceleration with gravity itself. From there, he builds toward the general relativity principle, where no state of motion is physically preferred and gravity becomes a manifestation of spacetime curvature, local frames, and coordinate invariance.
