Sevastopol is Leo Tolstoy’s vivid and deeply human account of the Crimean War, based on his own experiences as a young officer during the siege of Sevastopol. Through a series of interconnected sketches, Tolstoy portrays soldiers facing fear, courage, suffering, ambition, and death amid the brutality of battle. Rather than glorifying war, he exposes its confusion, destruction, and emotional cost while revealing moments of compassion and dignity. With sharp observation and psychological insight, Sevastopol captures both the heroism and tragedy of military life. The work stands as an important early expression of Tolstoy’s realism and his growing opposition to war.
