A careless wish. A genie's twisted gift. One year to decide who she really is.

Carl never expected anything interesting to happen to him. He was just house-sitting for his wealthy cousin Judy while she left for a girls' weekend. One frustrated muttering beside the pool—"I wish I could have fun like Judy for once"—and the genie answered.

Now Carl is Carla.

Overnight, the world has rewritten itself. She has a new body, a new name, a new life, and only a handful of people who remember the truth. The genie won't return for twelve months. Until then, Carla has no choice but to live as the woman she never asked to become.

What begins as panic on a resort balcony becomes something far more complicated: learning the routines no one warns you about, discovering pleasure in a body that still feels both foreign and electric, and finding herself drawn to a man who treats her with patience, intensity, and a quiet dominance she never knew she craved.

But the new life isn't only soft sheets and late-night confessions. At work, Carla faces the kind of quiet, calculated attention that turns every closed door into a threat. The year forces her to confront power, desire, fear, and the version of herself she is slowly choosing to become.

When the anniversary finally arrives and the genie returns, Carla will have one wish left.

She already knows exactly what she's going to do with it.
