The Air Traffic Controller's Shield DBT Distress Tolerance and Check the Facts for Pressure, Cognitive Clarity, and Safer Decisions

Separation. Sequence. Timing. Phraseology. Scan. Handoff. Coordination.

The profession has a precise word for everything that matters — until it comes to the person doing the work.

Then a hard session becomes "stressful." A frightening moment becomes "a bad day." You drive home tired and still activated, and you are somehow expected to know what to do with what's left.

This manual was written for that remainder.

Its central claim: under pressure, you are managing two traffic pictures, not one.

The first is external, and it belongs entirely to the profession. Aircraft. Weather. Equipment. Procedures. People. Time.

The second is internal. Body arousal. Emotion. Memory. Prediction. Self-judgment. The urge to act before thinking has finished.

The second must never compete with the first — and Gideon Novak is unambiguous about the order. When you are on position, the rules, procedures, training, teamwork, and professional judgment that govern air traffic control come first. Nothing here displaces any of it.

These skills go around that system. Not through it, not over it. Around it, where the profession has left you without vocabulary.

Inside

A practical guide you can use this week: scenes you'll recognize, steps you can try today, and language that does not insult the problem.

Preface and How to Use This Book.

Chapter 1. The Unseen Battlefield: pressures of the control tower. The weight of responsibility, and what it means to hold lives in your hands.

Chapter 2. Why Traditional Coping Falls Short. Common pitfalls, and the difference between reactivity and responsiveness.

Each chapter shows what this looks like in ordinary days, and the first move that actually helps.
