Description & Overview

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a landmark Gothic novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley that explores scientific ambition, responsibility, isolation, and the consequences of attempting to control the forces of nature. The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who becomes obsessed with discovering the secret of creating life. Through his experiments, he succeeds in bringing a living being to life, but he is horrified by the creature’s appearance and immediately abandons it.

Rejected by its creator and by society, the creature becomes increasingly lonely and bitter. Although it initially seeks friendship and acceptance, repeated cruelty and rejection transform its desire for companionship into anger and revenge. It eventually confronts Victor and demands that he create a companion for it. When Victor destroys the unfinished companion, the creature vows to punish him by destroying everything he loves.

The resulting conflict carries both creator and creation across Europe and into the frozen Arctic wilderness. Through their tragedy, Shelley examines the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition and the moral responsibility of creators toward their creations. The novel also explores prejudice, loneliness, revenge, identity, and the human need for compassion. Combining Gothic horror with philosophical questions about science and humanity, Frankenstein remains one of the most influential works of English literature and a foundational novel of modern science fiction.
