Kira stands in the quiet clinic, her grief raw beneath a veil of dignity, as Simon Ballard, her late husband's older colleague, reviews the ledgers beside the examination table. His solid presence and calm authority fill the space her husband left empty, awakening a need she has buried since the funeral.

When their hands meet over the dropped key, neither withdraws. His voice drops into an order that blurs doctor and man. She goes to the padded table because he told her to. This examination will demand more than any professional boundary has ever allowed. The choice to lie back is hers, and he tells her to make it now.
