Katherine Echols faces ruin if she fails to secure guardianship of her orphaned niece, yet her only path to safety lies in submitting to Ian Knightley's unyielding discipline. In the oak-paneled study, the cane marks her freshly before she must kneel at once to serve, the open ledgers and guardianship papers witnessing every correction.

Her eager-to-please nature masks the fear of abandonment that draws her deeper into this service she cannot admit she needs. The threat of exposure grows with each session, as the unlocked door stands between their arrangement and the society that would destroy her petition. Ian's tightly guarded presence offers protection she craves even as it heightens the danger.

He tells her to kneel again before the petition is heard.
